About Rillington Village Store

Our Story

We’re Richard and Kelly Batley—residents of Rillington since 2019 and proud shop owners since 31st October 2022. Drawn by the village’s rural charm, community spirit, and proximity to both Malton and the coast, we quickly grew attached to this place we now call home.

Under the Bradley’s ownership late 19th/early 20th century

Why We Took the Leap

When we learned the village shop was for sale and at risk of being lost, we knew we couldn’t let that happen. After viewing it in early 2022, nine months later we held the keys. Having previously run a guest house on the North York Moors, we already loved being part of a community—and owning a business under our own roof again, felt like a natural next step.

A Labour of Love

No. 1 High Street has kept us happily busy. From rebuilding chimneys and replacing doors and windows, to redecorating, upgrading electrics, improving storage, and introducing new suppliers and stock—we’ve poured our energy into restoring and uplifting the shop. And in true old-building style, the “to-do” list continues to grow, as we continue to breathe new life into the old bones of the building and grounds!

Continuing a Village Tradition

Thanks to the Historical Rillington Study Group, we learned the property appears in the 1851 census as the home of Wacup Rieveley, Grocer & Draper. Over 175 years later, we are honoured to continue that tradition. Today, alongside our newest addition—Newt the cocker spaniel—we’re proud to serve the community and invite you to get in touch, or simply pop in for a browse.
